The Do’s and Don’ts When You Have Water Damage in Your Poughkeepsie Home
8/6/2024 (Permalink)
A burst pipe caused significant standing water and damage to this finished basement. SERVPRO partnered with the homeowner to safely restore this home!
If you find yourself dealing with a water damage emergency at your home in Poughkeepsie, many questions run through your mind. Of course, the first question is “Where do I start?” After that and seeing the reality of the situation, it’s common to feel overwhelmed and to want to get everything fixed immediately, but safety is key and there are important things to be aware of:
DO:
-Shut off the water if you can or where the supply line is.
-Turn off circuit breakers where there are wet areas of the home or building, but ONLY when access to the power distribution panel is safe from electric shock.
-Call a licensed plumbing professional to have the repairs done immediately.
-Call your homeowner’s insurance company and file a claim. Doing so quickly will help get remediation coverage determined fast and therefore, help begin the restoration process in a timelier fashion.
-Call SERVPRO® of Western Dutchess County as soon as the water is off and you’re safe, (845)831-3600, no matter what time of day. We’re prepped and here to help 24/7, and faster to any size disaster.
-If you can, remove as much excess water as possible with towels and mopping. If you have a wet/dry vac, getting up the extra water helps the process of restoration as well. Don’t worry if you don’t have one, our experienced water damage restoration technicians will take care of everything quickly.
*IF you can’t access the area due to excessive water, do not enter the area and leave the room as it is for safety. Should you find yourself in a flooding situation, more than a foot of water, contact your local fire department to help as soon as possible. Higher amounts of water can affect critical areas like electrical panels, furnaces, oil tanks, etc.
-If you have any paintings, art objects, computers, documents, paperwork, publications and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture, get them to a safe and dry spot quickly. Leaving books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors can cause staining.
Our highly trained and experienced technicians can handle the restoration of these items too. Our “restore vs. replace” methods will help keep the costs down as well to both you and your insurance company. Our goal is to restore your home and belongings rather than you having to replace them. Keep in mind, not all personal items can be dried out or sometimes have had too much damage to them to be of use for you. Your insurance agent or carrier can help break down the specifics for you, and we’ll work with them directly to help make it seamless.
DON'T:
-Your household vacuum cleaner is not built to remove water. That could possibly cause electrical shock or damage to the vacuum cleaner.
-Anything electrical is going to be a hazard right now. Don’t use TV's or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
-If you notice water collecting a lighting fixture, leave it alone, there could be much more damage above that and risk the ceiling falling.
-If the ceiling is wet or if water has entered rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water, don’t turn on your ceiling fan.
Safety is first and foremost when it comes to water damage in your home. Following these DO & DON'Ts can help reduce damage and increase the chances of a successful restoration. These emergency tips will assist you in taking the proper action until the SERVPRO® of Western Dutchess County trained professionals arrive. Our teams will handle all aspects of the damage restoration process, from ceilings and walls to personal property, we’re always here to help!
How To Help Prevent Frozen Pipes this Winter in Hopewell Junction
8/6/2024 (Permalink)
When frozen pipes burst, water always finds the easiest way out, often through your house! SERVPRO® will handle the water damage from start to finish!
During the winter months in Dutchess County, frozen pipes are one of the most common calls we get to help homeowners with water damage. In fact, burst pipes are one of the biggest causes of water damage during the winter months, amounting to more than $5,000 in property losses on average (per household).
Understanding why pipes freeze, why frozen pipes burst and how these factors can lead to water damage is an important part of keeping your household dry and warm during the wintertime. Read on for our guide to frozen pipes and how to prevent them.
How Pipes Freeze and Why They Burst
When the weather is cold enough, any pipe can freeze—while those running through unheated areas such as exterior walls or basements are the most vulnerable, even pipes inside the home can become frozen if conditions are right.
When temperatures drop and the water inside the pipes begins to freeze, it can create a major problem as you will not be able to access running water. However, if frozen pipes are left alone and no effort is made to thaw them, the pressure inside will become too great and the pipe can actually burst open, leading to water damage.
Ways Frozen Pipes Can Cause Water Damage
Once a pipe bursts open, the chance for water damage is instantly increased. Instead of bursting directly where the frozen blockage is, pipes generally burst further up the line, in between a closed faucet and where the blockage occurs—quite often in a wall or under a sink, which may not be discovered immediately if it occurs. This allows all the built-up water to begin coursing through the breakage and flow freely through your home. Make no mistake, water will always find the path of least resistance, the easiest way out, and that might not be exactly the location of damaged pipe.
How to Prevent Pipes from Freezing
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to prevent their pipes from freezing and avoid the hassle and cost of water damage. By taking steps to help prevent pipes from freezing in the first place, it will greatly lessen the chances throughout the colder months:
- If you are leaving for a long period of time, make sure the heat stays set to above 50 degrees. Do not turn the heat off or postpone a regular fuel oil delivery.
- Leave faucets on a slight drip so water is constantly running through the pipes.
- Open cabinet doors in the kitchen and bathroom and ensure all the bedroom doors are open to increase airflow.
- Add insulation to exterior areas with water pipes and/or to the pipes themselves. Don’t forget the outside spigots. Simple steps like a light bulb being left on in a cold area combined with inexpensive pipe insulation could do the trick.
- Keep garage and cellar doors closed tightly if there are water lines inside.

There are a lot of companies out there, so it can be difficult to determine what is important when researching restoration companies. Here’s a guide of what to look for to make the right choice:
*A Full Restoration Provider
House damages, including water damage, not matter the cause, often require multiple types of restoration. Water can cause structural issues which means not only the removal of water and drying things out, but sheet rock, insulation, sub flooring and other components might need to be replaced as well. Our professionals are trained and certified in every type of water damage remediation and will provide full restoration of your home.
*A Flexible Emergency Service
When you discover home damage, you want to be sure you can contact your restoration company right away. That is why we have a 24-hour, 7 day-a-week emergency line staffed by live people, not just a recording, so we answer whenever you call and can assemble our teams right away.
*A Thorough Training Program

We pride ourselves on constantly evolving as new technology is introduced and additional certifications are gained.
A Scalable Model
While we have been a LOCAL community business for over 30 years, we also have a nationwide network of other franchises that we can work with if a large disaster were to occur. No Matter the Damage, SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County Has the Tools and the Experience to Get It Done!
8/4/2023 (Permalink)
No matter the size water damage, SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County has the equipment to make it "Like it never even happened!"
No two water damages are the same. It doesn’t matter if it’s from a pipe burst, an appliance malfunction, a leak from a hot water heater or a flood, each one must be handled and remedied in its own customized way. SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County has been remediating and restoring water damaged properties since 1992, in fact, it’s the cornerstone of our local business.
For larger losses that affect a greater area, you can count on us to have the experience, the teams, and the equipment to get it done the right way, the first time. We pride ourselves on extensive and ongoing training and always having the needed tools on hand and close by. No waiting for specialty tools or personnel to arrive from elsewhere, helping make the restoration process efficient and seamless.
For example, when there’s a large amount of insulation in a basement or crawlspace that’s been saturated, it needs to be removed cleanly and safely. Our professionals utilize an insulation vacuum to make this type of job safe, quick, effective. It helps contain the affected insulation in an easy to dispose of fashion and can be utilized outside for less special restrictions.
For even larger water damages that need to get dried out, like an auditorium, arena, or commercial structures, we use a powerful industrial machine called a Desiccant Dehumidifier. Desiccant dehumidifiers utilize chemical attraction, instead of condensation, to remove water from the air. Because they do not use condensation, they are not limited by low dew point temperatures, and when used properly, they produce the lowest vapor pressure of any dehumidifier. Portable desiccant dehumidifiers work best in cool and/or dry environments. The cooler and drier the air going into the desiccant, the drier the air will be coming out. The drier the air, the drier the materials get. We call that back to preloss condition.
With over 30 years in the property restoration industry, you can rely on SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County to handle any type of water damage in your home, or business! Available for emergencies and always with a live person answering the phone! Call the pros who have been taking care of properties locally. We’re available and ready to help 24/7, and we’ll make it “Like it never even happened.”
How Does a Storm Safety Plan Help You Prepare Your Hopewell Junction Home?
8/4/2022 (Permalink)
No matter where you live in Dutchess County or anywhere in N.Y., a storm safety plan is a must for any home and family!
Many people try not to think about it, but severe weather can be frightening and dangerous. Not to mention the fact that there are around 100,000 thunderstorms throughout the United States every year, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, hail and flooding, all putting you and your Hopewell Junction home at risk.
In New York, we are often led to believe that the winter is the time for fear, and while those winter storms should cause concern, it’s the spring and summer storms that frequently do the most damage. Here in Dutchess County, the Hudson River, Wappingers and Fishkill Creeks run right through a lot of our towns, putting everyone’s property in this area at risk of flood damage.
Unfortunately, we can’t hit a magic button and make extreme weather disappear, but we can take action ahead of time to be prepared for when it happens.
Among the steps you should take, creating an emergency kit and forming a communication strategy with your family are two of the most important. We’ll discuss a variety of ways to help you prepare for storms, and ideally, reduce the impact that they have on you and your home or business.
Your Severe Weather Communication StrategyAs they often say “communication is key,” and this is especially true during dangerous weather. By knowing where your loved ones are, you can focus on yourself and everyone is in the home instead of being distracted.
Along with family communication, listening to your local officials for emergency alerts is important to stay informed about the current situation. Cellphones and television work well, but storms can knock out the power or a signal, so an NOAA weather radio is a good thing to have.
Finally, creating a communication strategy between the people in your household is crucial. This includes designating a room in the home to take shelter in, ideally in the center of the home with no windows nearby.
Your Severe Weather Emergency KitThe art of being prepared goes far beyond proper communication and planning—it also requires you to have the right materials as well. Typically it’s smart to keep at least 72 hours worth of food, water and medical supplies (including prescriptions) in case of emergency.
If you want to be extra prepared, pack batteries, flashlights, clothes, blankets and a portable battery pack for any devices. Once you’ve gathered the items and packed them neatly, store the emergency kit in your chosen safe room so that it’s ready to use when necessary.
Your Severe Weather Aftermath ChecklistAfter the extreme weather is over, you should take a few additional steps in order to stay prepared for the next event. Taking account of how your planning and strategy worked or didn’t work will allow you to improve it and stay ready.
Lastly, once it’s safe to exit the home with your family, take some time to check your property for damage.
While most damage is immediately visible, it’s a good idea to check your roof, windows, doors, and crawl space or basement for any signs of moisture or other damage indicators.
While we hope that your home is left untouched, storms will frequently do damage to the modern home as well as the classic, so knowing the next step is important. At SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County, you can rely on us to respond quickly and be there right when you need us.
If you discover storm damage to your home or business, you can count on SERVPRO to handle the restoration. We’re here 24⁄7 to spring into action—get in touch with us today.

Read on to learn more.
In the Pacific Northwest region, they are dealing with wet weather and heavy rains, which can lead to flooding or other water damage. In certain areas with higher elevations, they have wet weather as well, but it’s likely coming from melting snow or ice, which can obviously present problems of its own.
The Upper Midwest and Northeast regions are dealing with winter weather, and will continue to do so until late spring or early summer. When we say winter weather, we are talking snowstorms and blizzards, which are still happening during spring. This is the weather we’re familiar with!
People who live in the West Coast aren’t having to worry with blizzards, but rather they are dealing with excessive heat waves. These heat waves can endanger lives.
Moving on to the middle area of the United States, from Iowa to Texas, residents are dealing with dry, windy weather! They are seeing things like windstorms, derechos and wildfires, all of which are extremely dangerous. This area also contains something known as Tornado Alley.
The Southeast region is the last area, and they experience everything from severe thunderstorms to tornadoes. Southern states along the coast also need to watch for rip currents and the potential of early-season hurricanes.
As you can see, no matter what region you live in, there will always be some weather hazard that you need to prepare for. Weather is unpredictable and no matter the season, there will always be some type of hazard or risk. Make sure you stay alert, aware and prepared at all times.

How Long Do You Think You Have to Escape a House Fire In Your Wappingers Home?
3/4/2022 (Permalink)
Have a solid fire evacuation plan in place at your home, you'll have less than 3 minutes to get out!
No matter what kind, house fires are extremely dangerous. According to the Red Cross, around 350,000 homes experience a house fire every year in the United States, causing hundreds of thousands in household property damage and killing more people than every type
of natural disaster combined. Suffice it to say, house fires are treacherous.
While preventing a house fire is the best line of defense, it is also important to note what you
should do if you find yourself faced with one. While we all hope to never be in this situation,
it is something that is wise to think through just in case an emergency does occur.
How Quickly Do House Fires Spread?
House fires can spread rapidly. The first 30 seconds are vital to extinguishing a fire, if it is safe to do so—after this brief window, the flames will have likely spread too far to be combated by a fire extinguisher. If it is not safe to extinguish a fire, then it is a must to get out quickly.
In the early stages, inhaling smoke is the most dangerous aspect of a fire, so stay low to the
ground as you escape.
How Quickly Should My Fire Evacuation Plan Take?
Every household should have a fire evacuation plan in place so everyone knows how to get out
in the event of a fire. Everyone in the household should be able to execute this plan in under two minutes, regardless of where they are in the home or where the fire breaks out.
How Quickly Does a House Become Fully Engulfed in Flames?
It takes around three to four minutes for a home to become fully engulfed in flames. At around
the three-minute mark, the temperature of a fire will exceed 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit—this is
hot enough for items nearby to combust even if they do not come in direct contact with the
flame.
This is also hot enough to shatter any glass windows, which allows the fire to spread to the
outside of the home as well.
Create an evacuation plan for your whole family, include your pets and practice it every 6 months. Make changes as needed and take feedback from family members. Avoid fire hazards like overloaded power strips and extension cords, space heaters, practice safe and smart cooking techniques and keep home décor away from candles or fireplaces.
*If you have damage to your Wappingers home from a house fire, SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County can help. Our fire restoration team is here 24/7 for assistance. We'll be with you every step of the way and help make it "Like it never even happened."
The Reasons Why Flooding Is So Dangerous in Dutchess County
8/20/2021 (Permalink)
Flooding comes with many dangers, be prepared ahead of time to avoid even bigger problems!
Flooding is frightening for many reasons. The damage that flooding can cause to your Wappingers home is quite alarming, but an additional concern is the actual dangers that floods can cause.
Whether you are dealing with flash floods, gradual floods from bad weather like storm run off or flooding due to a burst pipe or backed-up drain, there are many reasons to be cautious around any type of floodwater.
While many people assume that this is only a concern if they live in a flood prone area, floods can occur even in areas that are not considered traditional floodplains—and floods cause more deaths than any other thunderstorm-related hazard every year. For this reason, it is important to be aware of the dangers so you can keep yourself and your family safe.
The Dangers That Flooding Can Cause
**The risk of contamination.** When there is a flood, it is impossible to know exactly what the flood waters have come into contact with, which means they could be heavily contaminated with chemicals, bacteria and other hazards. If possible, avoid having to come in contact with flood waters, especially if you do not know its source. Additionally, flood waters can contaminate drinking water sources, so be sure to check with authorities before utilizing any tap water.
**The risk of driving hazards.** Fast-moving flood waters are one of the leading causes of deaths relating to floods, in part because of how deceptive they can be. As little as two feet of moving water can sweep away a vehicle, and it takes only six inches to knock someone off of their feet. Never attempt to walk through or drive through flood waters, as they are often deeper than they may appear.
**The risk of electrical shock.** If a room in your home floods and your electricity is still on, the water can quickly become a conductor of electricity and lead to a dangerous shock. If it is safe to do so, always switch your electricity and gas lines off in the event of a flood. Once the flooding subsides, be sure to check with local authorities before turning your electricity back on and using any electronics that were plugged in at the home. It's a good idea to get a professional electrician to make sure everything is working as it should afterwards.
*If you have damage due to flooding, you can depend on SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County to help. We guarantee a quick response and can handle all aspects of flood restoration. Contact us today and we'll help make any kind of water damage, "Like it never even happened."

Why There is Never an “Off” Season When it Comes to Mold Growth in Dutchess County
3/25/2021 (Permalink)
Check out our most popular questions and answers to your mold questions!
Doesn't matter the season, there will always be mold in the Hudson Valley. Here's some of our most popular questions and answers to this irritating product of nature.
“It’s 20 degrees out, there’s no way that is mold growing in my basement, it’s not warm enough.”
The hard truth is that mold, or microbial growth, happens whenever there is a consistent moisture or water source and it’s above 32 degrees. That means a leaky hot water heater or pipe in the ceiling can very well be the source of mold in the winter in your basement.
“Ok, yes it smells funky and we noticed a leak in the wall, but it’s been fixed, now what?”
Ah, yes- the undeniable smell of mold. The dirty, musty, earthy, mushroomy, slightly bitter, off-putting, something-is-weird-here smell. Now, put down the bottle of bleach. Trust us, that will only touch the surface of the mold growth. Even if you see a difference when you scrub it, the inside of the material is still harboring a whole colony of microbes.
“Yuck, where does it even come from?”
Microbial growth is naturally occurring in the environment and gets into your home through hitching a ride on clothes, shoes and pets. But it will always be present when water is present. Mold spores just need moisture, comfy temperature and a good food source like wood or sheet rock to live and grow.
“But it’s cold out, how is it growing?”
It’s not 20 degrees inside your walls unless they’re completely uninsulated from the environment. A basement, crawl space and attic usually are insulated to help keep pipes from freezing in the winter and to keep heat inside. If you have an unknown pipe leak in the wall or ceiling, mold can start growing in as little as 48 hours. It does take longer to grow in the winter months, but it will still be there.
“Now, how do I get rid of it?”
The first step is to call a certified mold remediation company, like SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County. Our experienced team will ask a few questions to get a good idea of what you might be dealing with. In some cases, they’ll recommend you have the mold tested by a mold assessor, those are independent companies who focus on the science behind the mold and what kind you could have.** What the mold assessor finds by lab testing is what our remediation techs use as a protocol for treatment and mitigation. We’ll be happy to give you a few names of companies we’ve worked with before and you can choose whoever you feel is the right fit for your situation.
Utilizing the protocol, our certified mold remediation pros will handle the containment, removal and treatments of the affected areas in your home, that can also include drying equipment and specialized treatments depending on the scope of the project.
Once the mitigation is complete, the assessor will come back to re-test to make sure all is clear. This is crucial to get documented as well when you sell or if you’re buying a home.
If you think you might have a mold issue in your home or business anywhere in Dutchess County, trust the local experts who have been taking care of the Hudson Valley for 29 years. We’ll walk you through every step of the way, and always here to help-24/7.
**Per NY State guidelines- the remediation company and the mold testing company can not be one and the same, that’s a significant conflict to you as the consumer.
Keeping Your Pets Safe During Severe Weather in Fishkill and Poughkeepsie
3/22/2021 (Permalink)
Great tips for keeping your pets safe during severe weather!
If you’re like most pet owners, you have an undeniable bond with the furry or feathered friend in your life. Naturally, as a conscientious pet parent, you want to be sure you’re doing everything you can to keep your pet safe and secure during difficult times.
Your pets should always be part of your emergency plan, and your emergency kit needs to include items like leashes, collars, extra pet food and any medications your pets take. It’s also a good idea to learn more about their unique safety needs during emergency situations. Learn ahead of time what hotels/motels are pet friendly, including if there’s a pet size or weight limit. In our experiences, knowing where you can stay with your fur-baby for the time being offers a lot of relief. There are several hotels in the Dutchess County area that happily accept pets and often, your homeowner’s insurance company can help make arrangements as well.
With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at how flooding can impact your pet and the steps you can take to keep your pet safe during a flooding emergency.
Pet Safety Pointers:
-The FDA and the AKC offer these tips to help you handle your pet during an emergency and ensure they come out safely on the other side. The National Weather Service has some valuable info as well.
-Keep your pets with you. Don’t leave your pets outside during a flood, and don’t leave your home without them. The best way to protect your pets is to do a little pre-planning and find places where you’ll all be welcome.
-Have your pet’s important records accessible. Treat your pet’s vaccination and health records like you do other important documents and keep copies accessible in your emergency kit. It’s also a good idea to take a selfie with your pet, so you can prove ownership if you get separated.
-Make your contact information accessible. Some pets have microchips that can help rescue workers reunite them with their owners. Also, consider a collar or tag with your pet’s name, your name and your phone number on it. This will ensure you can be easily contacted. Have trusted friends or family members set up as emergency contacts in the event your pet is lost. If your pet has enough of a connection with anyone else, they can assist in the relocation efforts.
-Don’t let your pet walk through flood water. It’s not a good idea for you or your dog to walk through moving water. Even a little water (about six inches), if it’s moving quickly enough, can knock you and your pet over. Additionally, flood waters can contain dangerous debris and harmful bacteria. These waters can affect your animal just as much as it would affect you.
If your home needs restoration services due to fire, flooding, sewage or any type of damage, trust the local experts at SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County. We’ve been here to help 24/7 for any emergencies since 1992.
Do You Know What to Do When Water Damages Your Hopewell Junction Home?
3/17/2021 (Permalink)
Acting fast can help reduce the issues that water damage can cause!
So, you’ve found water damage at your home. What’s your next step?
If you’re wondering what to do if you notice that your home has been damaged by water, then we’re here to help you break down your next steps and understand what you need to do about the problem at your home—and the steps to take to get your home back to its original state.
Water damage is a very common reason homeowners file claims on their insurance. In fact, it’s the most common type of homeowner’s insurance claims people file. These claims don’t often grab attention the way major storm damage or fires do, but they’re much more prevalent.
If a pipe in your basement bursts or you notice that your refrigerator or dishwasher is causing damage to the kitchen, maybe a leak behind the toilet is puddling on the bathroom floor, we’re here to help no matter the size of the damage!
What to Do When You Notice Water Damage
-Move as fast as you can to start remedying the problem. Water damage doesn’t get better over time, it gets worse. Water damage spreads fast, so you’ll want to start the repair and restoration process as soon as you can.
-Identify and stop the problem. For example, if a water line that’s loose behind an appliance caused the problem, tighten it. Or if you need to shut off your water after pipe bursts until it can be repaired, then that’s an option, too. Whatever the original cause of the water flowing into your home is, it needs to be corrected before the repair process can begin.
-Start the drying and repair process. Depending on the extent of your damage, you may need to do anything from grabbing a mop and some towels to clean up to touching base with a water restoration professional. You’ll be glad you did!
If your home is damaged due to fire, water or any other cause, the team at SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County has the experience and equipment to meet your needs and get your home restored to its original state. Call us at any hour for help. We’re ready to help your family!

Tips to Help Business Owners Thrive After a Commercial Restoration Project
Your business has what it takes to thrive even after damage has been done. But you need to know the best steps to take to help you move forward. Here’s what we recommend:
Your disaster plan is vital. It’s difficult for most business owners and their families to focus and think clearly after a damaging event. That’s why it’s smart to plan for these situations before they happen. Before you need it, build an emergency plan and spend time reviewing and learning the steps. If you’re impacted by a disaster, read the steps you laid out again (or a few times) and follow them carefully.
Document the damage you’ve suffered. Take plenty of pictures. You’ll want to do these before you start cleaning up the damage so your insurance company can get an accurate picture of what happened. In the age of COVID-19, more insurance companies are using virtual programs and videos to obtain the what is needed. Also, inventory lost or damaged items. We highly recommend you take photos of inventory well in advance of issues coming up so you’re able to compare and document much easier should damage occur.
Stay in touch with your stakeholders. Regular contact with your suppliers, your employees, your customers and your community will put you in a better position when it’s time to open again. Social media can be a huge help with communication especially with clients and customers in addition to emails and phone calls.
Choose solid partners for mitigation and restoration. Don’t work with any restoration company that isn’t highly experienced, doesn’t communicate regularly and isn’t able to utilize advanced equipment designed to restore your business to its original state.
If your business is damaged due to fire, water or any other cause, you can always count on us for restoration assistance. We have crews who are available 24⁄7 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services and how we can help you.
Natural Gas Furnace Safety Basics to Help Prevent Winter Fires in Your Dutchess County Home or Business
2/15/2021 (Permalink)
Natural gas is an efficient way to heat your business or home but be mindful of the safety basics to protect everyone!
Winters can be long and cold, especially in this part of New York. While most Dutchess County businesses and families find themselves turning up the heat during the cold months of the year, it’s especially important to help your loved ones and clients also stay safe during our cold, snowy winters.
Natural gas furnaces have become more popular in recent years because they provide steady heat and can be both affordable and efficient options. If you use your natural gas furnace safely, they can be a great option for heating.
However, if you choose a natural gas furnace, then you’ll need to remember to take some safety precautions that aren’t necessary when using electric heating.
Here’s what you need to know about heating with natural gas:
Be sure you have carbon monoxide detectors installed. These inexpensive detectors are a vital safety feature for homes with natural gas heating. They detect carbon monoxide, which is odorless before it becomes dangerous to your family.
Keep anything flammable away from the furnace. To use your natural gas furnace safely, it needs to be clear of papers, wood, fabric and debris on all sides. Also, consider sweeping around the furnace on a regular basis, so the area stays clear of dust and debris.
Check your filters regularly. Checking to see if your filter needs to be changed once a month is enough to make your furnace safer.
Don’t neglect regular service. Even if your furnace is working, it’s worth having a heating and air professional take a yearly look at it to let you know it’s in good shape. You can also catch issues before they become more expensive repairs.
Evacuate your home if you smell natural gas. Most people note that natural gas smells like rotten eggs. If you notice this odor in your home, shut off your gas and leave the house. Call Central Hudson or your gas service provider immediately. Then call to have your unit serviced and the gas leak found and repaired.
If you have fire damage in your home due to a kitchen fire or any other cause, you can count on SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County for immediate restoration assistance. We’re here to help 24/7 and will make it "Like it never even happened."
Be Sure Your Dutchess County Business or Commercial Property Is Ready for Disasters!
1/26/2021 (Permalink)
It's never too early to have a plan in place for potential disasters that could affect your business.
Do you and your family own a business or commercial buildings in Beacon or the surrounding communities? If so, you know how important being able to operate on schedule can be to your life and livelihood.
You probably have plans in place to deal with vacations, the holiday rush and busy weekends already. You have accountants or bookkeepers to plan for tax season, perhaps an office or property manager and a schedule to help you deal with the day to day. You probably have a carefully planned budget, too.
But have you planned for a disaster? If not, now is a good time to start thinking about how your business would handle the unexpected. We've all been forced to re-think our day-to-day due to COVID-19 but have you thought about other situations?
This is an important step for business owners because these events can’t be predicted, but they can greatly impact your business’ success. A solid disaster plan can help you reopen your business more quickly and even stop service disruptions in some cases.
Disasters That Can Impact Business Owners
Ready.gov, a website operated by the U.S. government, lists several disaster scenarios that businesses should have plans in place for. They include:
-Natural disasters- Floods, wildfires and storms can all cause significant damage to businesses.
-Health emergencies- Contagious illnesses, like COVID-19 or the flu, can sometimes cause a business to close, as can government or health organization orders to handle those illnesses.
-Violent acts- These can include accidents and intentional acts.
-Technology failures- Long-term power outages or equipment failures can be included in this plan.
What to Include in Your Plan
The Small Business Administration and Ready.gov offer helpful resources and checklists designed to help you plan for any disaster, keep in mind some basic tips that will help you get ready for any disaster:
Have a business evacuation plan. Know all the entrances and exits, and be sure your employees do, too. Have routes posted, and be sure employees know where fire extinguishers are located.
Keep a good inventory of what is inside your business. Your insurance company will want to know what’s damaged (if anything is). Accurate inventories make a difference. Photos are a great backup plan as well, the more the better.
Plan for communication with your employees and customers. This can be via email, phone, text or social media. Keeping everyone updated on your business and its progress keeps it top of mind.
Work with a reputable restoration company. Restoring your business efficiently, economically and logically is vital to being able to open your doors again. Working with a company like SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County can make a big difference.
If your business needs commercial restoration services, the local teams at SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County have the experience and equipment to meet your needs and help get your business ready to open its doors again. Tips for Staying Safe in Kitchen This Winter and Beyond | SERVPRO® of Western Dutchess County
1/5/2021 (Permalink)
Simple kitchen safety can help avoid a dangerous situation!
House fires are more common during the winter months in the Hudson Valley than they are at any other time during the year. And one of the main reasons fire damage happens to homes this time of year involves accidents in the kitchen.
Many families are cooking large meals to entertain guests or uphold long-held traditions from Thanksgiving through the New Year. But even after the holidays are over, many families spend more time cooking and baking on dark, cold winter nights.
Preventing Kitchen Fires
You can take steps to lower your risk for a kitchen fire if you follow some essential kitchen safety tips. By implementing these simple steps, you can significantly reduce your risk for a kitchen fire—and the resulting fire damage.
Don’t leave your oven and stove unattended. It’s tempting to leave a pot to simmer or a cake to bake for as long as it needs and leave the room. Unfortunately, not regularly checking the progress of a meal is a fire risk. Pots and pans that are left to boil over can cause accidents, and it’s possible to miss an oven fire if you don’t check how things are cooking.
Learn what to do if a small kitchen fire starts. For example, it’s best to cover a grease fire— don’t throw water on it. In general, don’t pull a pot or pan that’s flaming directly off the stove, because those flames can jump. Instead, it’s smart to cover or smother the fires. Keeping pot lids nearby, a fire extinguisher or baking soda can help you extinguish small kitchen fires fast.
Be careful with your clothes. In general, don’t cook meals while wearing a top with flowing sleeves. If these drag through a flame, they can start a fire and severely injure you. Opt for something fitted instead.
If you have fire damage in your home due to a kitchen fire or any other cause, you can count on SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County to provide emergency response for fire damage assistance. We’re here to help 24/7 and will make it "Like it never even happened."
A Look at the Different Types of Floods That Can Cause Damage to Your Home | SERVPRO® of Western Dutchess County
11/13/2020 (Permalink)
Be prepared ahead of time if you can for different types of floods and how they can affect your home!
Flooding is an extremely dangerous weather event, and it can happen when it is least expected, even in the Hudson Valley.
While a flood may seem like an event unlikely to happen, every year they impact around 75,000 people across the United States, causing billions of dollars of property damage in the process.
In simple terms, floods occur when there is too much water, but we will be looking at the various types of floods below to give you a greater understanding of why they happen.
The National Severe Storms Laboratory lists out five types of floods that can occur due to different conditions. While all of these floods can be destructive, they can cause issues for those impacted by them in vastly different ways.
The Types of Floods That Can Lead to Water Damage
-A River Flood
A river flood takes place when the banks of a river are not high enough to contain the water within. These are generally caused by slow-moving, steady rain or a combination of rainfall and snowmelt that causes the river to overflow.
-A Coastal Flood
Impacting areas along the coast, coastal floods are caused by high tides coupled with heavy rainfall. Coastal floods are especially prominent in areas that are low-lying and located on the ocean.
-Storm Surges
A storm surge occurs when a severe storm creates wind, waves and low pressure that lead to a much higher tide. Storm surges happen quickly and flood large areas at a time, and they are considered an extremely dangerous type of flood.
-Inland Flooding
When a rain-producing storm hovers over an area for a long time or heavy rains fall quickly, inland flooding can occur, as it creates too much moisture for the regular drainage systems to absorb. Inland flooding can also occur when dams or levees fail.
-Flash Floods
The most dangerous type of flooding, flash floods occur within six hours of a storm beginning and often provide little notice that they are developing. They can occur within minutes and are considered the deadliest type of flood there is.
If your home or business has received water damage due to a flood or another incident, we are ALWAYS here to help. You can reach us 24/7 to receive a response from our expert restoration technicians— call us today.
No Matter the Job, SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County Has the Tools to Get It Done!

This insulation vacuum is being utilized to remove a large amount of wet insulation from a crawl space.
For larger losses that affect a greater area, you can count on us to have the experience and the equipment to get it done the right way, the first time. We pride ourselves on extensive and ongoing training and always having the needed tools on hand. No waiting for specialty tools or personnel to arrive from elsewhere, helping make the remediation process seamless.
When there’s a large amount of insulation in a basement or crawlspace that’s been saturated, it needs to be removed cleanly and safely. Our professionals utilize the insulation vacuum to make this type of job quick and effective. It helps contain the affected insulation in an easy to dispose of fashion and can be utilized outside for less special restrictions.
For even larger water damages that need to get dried out, like an auditorium, arena, or commercial structures, we use a powerful industrial machine called a Desiccant Dehumidifier. Desiccant dehumidifiers utilize chemical attraction instead of condensation to remove water from the air.
If your home or business has suffered any level of water damage, call the pros who have been taking care of properties for over 28 years. We’re available and ready to help 24/7, and we’ll make it "Like it never even happened."
The BIG Do's and Don't When Dealing With Water Damage at Your East Fishkill Home
11/6/2020 (Permalink)
Safety is always first when dealing with a water damage situation. Protect yourself and family members with these tip.
If you find yourself dealing with a water damage emergency at your home, many questions are running through your mind. Of course, the first question is “Where do I start?” But after that and looking at the reality of the situation, it’s common to want to get everything fixed immediately, but safety is key and there are important things to be aware of:
DO:
-Shut off the water if you can or where the supply line is.
-Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the home or building, but ONLY when access to the power distribution panel is safe from electric shock.
-Call a plumbing professional to have the repairs done immediately.
-Call your homeowner’s insurance company and file a claim. Doing so quickly will help get remediation coverage determined fast and therefore, get the work done faster.
-Call us as soon as the water is off and you’re safe, (845)831-3600, no matter what time of day. We’re ready to help 24/7 and faster to any size disaster.
-If you can, remove as much excess water as you can by towels and mopping. If you have a wet/dry vac, getting up the extra water helps the process of restoration as well. Don’t worry if you don’t have one, our experienced water damage restoration technicians will take care of everything quickly.
-If you have any paintings, art objects, computers, documents, paperwork, publications and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture, get them to a safe and dry spot quickly. Leaving books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors can cause staining.
Our highly trained and experienced technicians can take care of drying out all of them items too. Our “restore vs. replace” methods will help keep the costs down as well to both you and your insurance company. Our goal is to restore your home and belongings rather that you having to replace. Keep in mind, not all personal items can be dried out or sometimes have had too much damage to them to be of use for you. Your insurance agent or carrier can help break down the specifics for you, and we’ll work with them directly to help make it seamless.
DON'T:
*DO NOT enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist. *AVOID electrical shock hazards. DO NOT enter affected areas if any electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers or electrical equipment are exposed to water.
If this could be an issue, call the fire department for assistance.
-If the ceiling is wet or if water has entered rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water, it’s dangerous to try your ceiling fan.
Safety is first and foremost when it comes to water damage in your home. Following these DO & DON'Ts can help reduce damage and increase the chances of a successful restoration. These emergency tips will assist you in taking the proper action until the SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County trained professionals arrive. We’re always here to help!
How to Choose A Restoration Company for Water Damage in your Wappingers Home
11/6/2020 (Permalink)
Choosing the right restoration company can make a huge difference in recovering from damage at your home.
If you’ve discovered that you’ve suffered fire, water or sewage damage in your home, a common reaction is confusion and not knowing the right steps to take or even the first call to make. Between consulting with your homeowner’s insurance and that added stress, figuring out what restoration company can help, assessing damage to personal items and taking care of other urgent tasks, it can be an overwhelming and stressful time.
However, by choosing a reputable and certified restoration company in advance, homeowners can alleviate at least one part of the process before it even begins and feel some relief. The highly trained and experienced staff at SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County will help guide you the rest of the way.
There are quite a few restoration companies out there so it can be difficult to determine what is important when researching restoration companies. Some have different focuses than others, some are not local, some aren’t available quickly. Here’s a guide of what to look for to make the right choice:

Our can handle every type of damage remediation from the very beginning to the final touches to provide full restoration of your home.
*A Flexible Emergency Service
When you discover home damage, you want to be sure you can contact your restoration company right away, no matter the time of day. That is why we have a 24-hour, 7 day-a-week emergency line staffed by live people, not just a recording, so we answer whenever you call and can assemble our teams right away.

Must-Haves for Your Emergency Kit, the 2020 and Beyond Version
11/6/2020 (Permalink)
Having an emergency kit fully packed for grab-and-go is a great way for your family and pets to be prepared for whatever disaster might occur.
When a weather emergency or other disaster strikes that could force you to leave your home or happen while you’re away from home, there won’t be time to gather your supplies before heading to a safe space to wait it out. That is why having an emergency kit that is fully stocked and ready can make such a big difference in your survival during a disaster.
Experts recommend that your emergency kit contain enough for several days for each family member and pet, as well as some necessities such as personal hygiene supplies and emergency radios. Though we all hope we will never experience a serious disaster, having an emergency kit is the best way to obtain peace of mind and know your family will have what it needs to get by.
The Basic Emergency Kit
Every emergency kit should be tailored for individual needs and considerations, however to build an emergency kit with the bare necessities, this is what Ready.gov recommends:
- At minimum, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days
- A three-day supply of non-perishable food per person
- Either a battery-powered or hand-crank radio for local alerts
- A NOAA Weather Radio for national alerts
- Flashlights and headlamps for each person
- A well-stocked first-aid kit, don’t forget gloves, masks and hand sanitizer for all
- Any prescription medications your family members may require
- Pet supplies including leashes, bowls, food, prescriptions and any comfort item they like. Make a copy of their license to carry with you as well for proof.
- A surplus of batteries for the flashlights and radios
- Whistles to signal for help and locate each other if necessary
- Paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags, wet wipes and any other personal hygiene supplies
- A can opener and utensils for food
- Local maps of the area with shelters clearly marked
- Portable chargers and several cell phone charging cords
Additional Supplies for Emergencies
Having the above items is an ideal place to start, but if you have the space and ability to build out a more robust kit, there are some additional items you may want to include:
- Tools such as wrenches, hammers, nails and pliers
- Plywood in case it is necessary to barricade doors or windows
- Duct tape and plastic sheeting in case an impromptu shelter needs building
- Solar-powered chargers for using electronics long-term
- Climate-appropriate spare clothes

Creating a Fire Escape Plan for Your Wappingers Home
11/3/2020 (Permalink)
Fire escape plans are a great way for everyone to know what to do in the event of a fire and to get to safety quickly.
When a fire breaks out, it is human nature to panic but everyone has a different reaction. Because it is not a scenario that most of us have ever been faced with, it can be alarming and overwhelming to experience. However, it is important to try to react rationally in order to get yourself and your family members to safety.
A fire can start spreading in as little as 30 seconds, and experts estimate that you typically only have one to two minutes to react and get to safety when a fire starts . Therefore, it is important to have a fire escape plan that the whole household is aware of and practice it regularly. That way, when a fire breaks out, everyone will know exactly what to do to stay safe.
Here are the steps to creating a fire evacuation plan:
- Create a custom plan. Every family is different, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to a fire escape plan. Make sure to consider elderly family members, children who might sleep through a fire alarm and pets. Take note of time needed to get everyone to an exit and locate pets to get them to safety. Keep in mind, pets sense danger much quicker than we can and have been known to hide in hard to reach spots.
- Identify two exits. Each room should have two exits so those inside can escape no matter where the fire is. If necessary, equip upstairs rooms with emergency ladders so windows can be the second point of exit.
- Set a spot to meet. Pick a meet-up spot in advance that will be safe, such as a nearby landmark, a neighbor’s yard, tree or mailbox. Make sure everyone is clear on the location of the meet-up spot.
- Consider all scenarios. There are many scenarios that can contribute to a fire, and it is important to prepare for all of them. Do not focus on preparing for one source of a fire and neglect to prepare for others. For example, don’t focus on a fire only occurring in the kitchen when it can happen in the basement or attic.
- Practice often. Get the entire household together to run a fire drill at least twice a year using a mock scenario. Be sure any overnight guests are aware of the plan as well.
Tip: Get children excited about planning so they will be more involved in the process and less scared. Drawing a map of the home and letting them identify the exits is both a functional and educational activity.
Fire Prevention Tips
- Install smoke detectors in each bedroom and on every level of the home.
- Check smoke detectors once a month. Replace batteries every time the clocks change or at least every 6 months, even hard-wired detectors.
- Replace smoke detectors every 10 years.
- Make sure all candles are extinguished and no holiday décor is around them.
- Never leave open flames unattended.
- If you have a Christmas tree up, don’t let it get dried out. It can burn from hot lights in minutes.
- Do not overwhelm electrical sockets with excessive plugs.
- Keep combustibles in a safe place.
- If you are grilling outside, make sure the grill is cold before putting it back up against the house.
- Don’t run appliances at night like clothes dryers. Make it a yearly maintenance check to have the dryer vent cleaned out too.
If you’re ever faced with fire and smoke damage in your home or business, don’t hesitate to call us. Our emergency services are available 24/7 for all restoration needs. SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County is always here to help.

Winter Prep Tips You Can Do In The Fall To Protect Your Beacon Home
11/2/2020 (Permalink)
Some easy fall prep can really help keep your home protected in the bitter winter months.
Living in Dutchess County has probably gotten you used to what your family might need for the winter months. Big, cozy sweaters, blankets and coats come out, lots of warm-them-up meals to plan, getting the shovels and ice melt out of storage and handy, fireplaces cleaned and wood at-the-ready.
How about your home? Consider what your home needs to keep it running in the cold temps as well. Some simple home strategy in the fall months can help avoid a very costly and inconvenient experience in your Ulster County home this winter. (Think pipes bursting or ice damming, zero fun there.)
Creating a list of to-dos’ around the house before winter comes can be a reliable source that you’ll come to count on and revise over the years with what’s more important or more useful than other things on the list. Important things to include:
-Winter heating costs- It’s a great idea to put some savings aside for unexpected issues like plumbing failures, fireplace problems, heating system malfunctions and pipe issues. While your homeowner’s insurance might be able to help with some costs due to damage, don’t rely on it 100% as there are a ton of variables that are covered and not. Good idea to call your local insurance agent to be clear on what’s covered in case something unexpected happens.
-Windows and doors can equal drafts in the winter, especially in older homes. Don’t forget the basement and check everywhere for drafts and insulate or seal as needed. Put in storm windows and doors if you have them. Weather stripping and door draft stoppers are inexpensive and easy.
-Consider hiring a professional to perform a furnace inspection as well as having the dryer vents and duct work cleaned and to check the fireplace. We recommend these services on a yearly basis.
-Drain any water from outdoor faucets, spigots, hoses and sprinklers. Locate water sources if they need to be shut off in an emergency. Use heat tape on problem pipes inside the home to help prevent them from freezing.
-Use caulking or weather stripping around entry points if any pipes or ducts travel through an exterior wall.
Some solid prep work in the fall can really help in the long and short run of things. Not just peace of mind for safety and security, but for your wallet too.

If You Have an Oil Furnace, Boiler or Hot Water Heater in Your Fishkill Home, Learn What a Puffback Is!
1/27/2020 (Permalink)
Puff backs can be dangerous to breathe in, call the experts at SERVPRO to get it cleaned up right!
Have you ever seen a car backfire and there’s a dark plume of smoke behind it when that happens? That’s similar to what can occur to your oil furnace, it’s when the burners don’t ignite upon start up and cause excess oil fumes to combust, or an explosion of un-burned oil. This reaction can produce a large amount of smoke that will cause soot and debris to spread throughout your house, called a Puff Back.
Maybe you’ve noticed oily, black-looking webs on your ceiling? Those are soot webs, exactly the bi-product of a puff-back. If you think it’s only going to found in the areas where the vents might be, think again. The only thing soot is good at, is traveling and hiding. Closed kitchen cabinets? Yup, it probably got in there. Guest bath down the hall? Most likely you’ll feel an oily film or see blackish spots in there too. Forced air systems will do their job and force the air everywhere along with whatever soot is hitching a ride.
Inhaling soot can be dangerous to your health, as it contains dirt, dust, chemicals, acids, and other harmful items. Inhaling those particles can lead to serious health issues. As much as you want to grab a sponge and get to work, most household cleaners can’t remove soot. the absolute best and easiest course of action is to contact a professional restoration company.
Some Quick “Now What Do I Do and Don't?”:
-Turn off the furnace. Don’t touch the soot and limit movement in the house. This also means don’t open windows or turn on fans.
-Don’t stay in the home if you really don’t need to. Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth if you must go inside for any reason. (Same for pets!)
-Do call your insurance company and file a claim.
-Call an HVAC specialist to fix the furnace.
-Call SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County 24/7. Our trained experts will walk you through every step, get that damage cleaned up and work directly with your insurance company to get this taken care of quickly and efficiently.
We’re always here to help at (845)831-3600.
Preventing Water Damage From Frozen Pipes | SERVPRO® of Western Dutchess County
1/7/2020 (Permalink)
Frozen pipes can be a major headache in the winter months, protect your home against them!
During the chill of the winter months in Dutchess County, frozen pipes are a serious concern we hear about from homeowners. In fact, burst pipes are one of the biggest causes of water damage during the winter months, amounting to more than $5,000 in property losses on average.
When temperatures drop and the water inside the pipes begins to freeze, it can create an inconvenience as you will not be able to access running water. However, if frozen pipes are left alone and no effort is made to thaw them, the pressure inside will become too great and the pipe can actually burst open, leading to water damage.
Ways Frozen Pipes Can Cause Water Damage
Once a pipe bursts open, the potential for water damage is automatically increased. Instead of bursting directly at the frozen blockage, pipes generally falter further up the line, in between a closed faucet and where the blockage occurs—often in a wall or under a sink, which may not be discovered immediately if it occurs. This allows all the built-up water to begin coursing through the breakage and flow freely through your home.
How to Prevent Pipes From Freezing
Fortunately, there are steps that homeowners can take to prevent their pipes from freezing and avoid costly water damage. By preventing pipes from freezing in the first place, it will greatly lessen your headache throughout the colder months:
- If you are leaving for a long period of time, make sure the heat stays set to above 50 degrees.
- Leave faucets on a slight drip so water is constantly running through the pipes.
- Open cabinet doors in the kitchen and bathroom and ensure all the bedroom doors are open to increase airflow.
- Add insulation to exterior areas with water pipes and/or to the pipes themselves.
- Keep garage and cellar doors closed tightly if there are water lines inside.
Are you concerned that a pipe has burst in your home? Contact us to have our trained experts inspect your home for moisture damage. We're here to help 24/7!
It’s Not Just the Flames that Do the Damage to Your Home or Business | SERVPRO® of Western Dutchess County
11/19/2019 (Permalink)
The flames from a fire are only one part of the damages that can occur during a residential or commercial fire.
Whether it’s at your Wappingers home or your Poughkeepsie business, a fire is a devastating occurrence. Once the flames are put out, the next step is often confusing at to what the cleanup truly entails and what kind of damage has really been done.
Horrible flames are what most of us think of, but the fire itself isn’t always what causes the most damage. Smoke, soot and water damage go together with a fire no matter the type, and it is important to work with a trusted and reliable restoration company that understands how to handle all these issues.
The Types of Damage That Fires Can Cause
Smoke Damage Smoke inhalation is the #1 cause of fire-related deaths, and smoke damage is also one of the most severe ways a structure can be impacted after a fire. Smoke seeps into absolutely everything, damaging furniture, walls, flooring, even the furthest rooms. For areas not physically touched by the flames, paint discoloration, corroded appliances and unbearable odors can all be expected following simply due to the smoke.
Soot Damage Soot is an inescapable, dangerous substance that WILL cover nearly any material in a layer of extremely hazardous film. Soot is the deposit that smoke leaves behind, which often contains many dangerous chemicals as a result of the burning of plastics and other materials. Not only can soot linger on items, but it can also infiltrate the ducts of the HVAC system in a home or business, leading to contaminated air quality that results in health issues. Hiring a restoration company that can also remediate your HVAC system and duct work is key to improving the air quality.
Water Damage Whether it is from firefighting efforts or automated sprinkler systems, water damage and fire damage are often intertwined. Not only can water damage result in more damage to susceptible items such as electronics, but it can also result in mold growth if it is not removed quickly by a professional. In the right humidity and temperatures, mold will start to grow within 48 hours. Though putting out the fire should always be the first concern, it is important that cleanup is done properly and efficiently in order to mitigate as much damage as possible and to avoid secondary issues.
SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County has been the trusted, LOCAL fire and water damage remediation company since 1992. We have the certified professionals who will handle any remediation needed, in either a commercial or residential property and get you back to normal quickly.
If your home or business has been impacted by a fire, we are here to help! We’re here to help, 24/7 and can make it “Like it never even happened.”
An Overview of How Storms Can Damage a Home | SERVPRO® of Western Dutchess County
11/13/2019 (Permalink)
The effects of a storm can be very damaging, give us a call asap if you suffer any kind of storm damage.
Though storm warnings are fairly common, it is important to take weather advisories seriously every time they are issued. Because of the variance in weather and atmospheric conditions, no two thunderstorms are exactly the same. Though some might pass through and bring gentle showers, others can cause extreme amounts of damage in a short time.
To give homeowners in Poughkeepsie, Fishkill, Wappingers and Beacon an idea of what to expect when severe weather is forecasted, we have compiled the four most common types of storm damages that can occur to a home. The effects of a severe storm can range from mild to severe, and it is important to know what to prepare for when hazardous weather is coming your way.
Lightning Damage Lightning strikes occur around 25 million times each year, and it is possible for lightning to strike the same place twice. When lightning strikes a home, it can cause fires, electrical issues and structural fractures, making it a large headache for homeowners. If your home is struck by lightning, having an expert inspection is key as lightning damage could also increase your chances for electrical fires in the future.
Hail Damage Hail is caused when the storm pushes rain clouds upward enough that the water droplets are frozen solid before passing through to the ground. Hail damage is commonly considered for cars that are parked outside, but it can also wreak havoc on a house’s roof, drainage systems and can even break windows if conditions are right.
Flood Damage Flooding is one of the most dangerous things that storms can lead to. While thunderstorms typically cause what are known as flash floods, they can also lead to more long-term flooding if conditions are right. Flood damages can be detrimental to a home and its contents and cause hazardous conditions for those in affected areas.
Wind Damage In some cases, severe storms can have winds as significant as a tornado would, yet they often last much longer. We all can remember a “straight line storm” that was thought to be a tornado by the shear damage it left. Severe weather can cause homes to become damaged beyond recognition, especially if they face an open area or are located in a spot where they might be particularly vulnerable to winds. If high winds are in the forecast, it is important to secure anything in your yard in advance and to take cover immediately as they approach.
If you’ve sustained any storm damage to your Western Dutchess County home, call us 24/7 to get your restoration process started right away!
Understand how Mold works and help prevent it in your Wappingers home
11/9/2019 (Permalink)
Controlling moisture and preventing water damage is the first step to keep mold out of your home.
The truth is that mold exists everywhere in nature. There is no way around it and not all forms are harmful or able to thrive. Mold needs moisture and a temperature above 32 degrees to live and thrive, as well as an organic food source to help it along (think wood, cardboard and soap). Mold spores can be found in almost any climate, in any home and often you’ll smell it before you can pinpoint its source.
Mold, or microbial growth stemming from water damage, is thought to be the #1 indoor air quality problem in U.S. housing. Not only does water lead to mold growth, but that itself can cause health issues and can lead to cosmetic problems in the home and structural rot if not repaired.
Controlling moisture in wood-based products like framing lumber and sheathing (typically used when building a home) by water management principles used by builders, helps deter mold growth by driving water away from the home or sloped away from the structure.
On the interior, make sure to check for leaks periodically in places like the bathroom, under sinks, the basement and attic spaces. If you’ve noticed a leak, can see mold growth or started to smell that famous smell, get it repaired as soon as possible and then call in the experts to get rid of any mold that might have developed.
SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County offers FREE estimates on mold damage and is experienced and certified in mold remediation. Trust your home to the local experts, in business since 1992. Call us today to schedule your free mold estimate, 845-831-3600.

The unknown fire hazard lurking in your Dutchess County home
11/4/2019 (Permalink)
A clogged dryer vent is more dangerous than most would think!
The weekly (or daily) task of getting the laundry done is not something we give too much thought to other than getting it out of the way, but according to Consumer Reports (2018), every year firefighters across the country respond to around 17,000 home fires caused by clothes dryers, according to the Building Performance Institute.
A whopping 34% of these fires is caused by an accumulation of lint, the simple task of cleaning the lint trap can set you up for a dangerous situation that can be far more serious than decreased performance caused by constricting a dryer's duct work.
Take a look at these best practices to ensure safety in the laundry room:
- Read the manufacturers’ instructions and warnings upon installation and be sure that your dryer is installed by a knowledgeable professional and that the correct electrical plug and outlet are used
- Clean the dryer lint filter before and after each load of laundry
- Clean the filter with a nylon brush at least once every six (6) months or more often if it becomes clogged.
- Completely clean lint out of the vent pipe every three (3) months.
- Check occasionally through the venting system behind the dryer to ensure it isn’t damaged.
- Put a cover on outside wall dampers to keep out the elements.
- Ensure the outdoor vent cover opens when the dryer is on.
- Consider having SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County clean your dryer venting. It’s easy, reasonably priced and will help ensure safety.
If you’re interested in scheduling a cleaning or if your family has experienced a fire of any kind and needs help restoring your home, SERVPRO® of Western Dutchess County can help 24/7! 11/4/2019 (Permalink)
A reliable list of to-do's before winter comes could really help avoid a costly situation!
It’s easy to remember what your family needs for a Dutchess County winter but consider what your home needs as well. Some simple home strategy prep in the Fall months can help avoid a very costly and inconvenient experience in your Poughkeepsie home this, and every winter.
Make a “Check it and Fix it” list of to-dos’ around the house, you’ll want to include things like:
-Winter heating costs- putting some savings aside for unexpected issues like pipes breaking, heating system malfunctions and plumbing failures.
-Check the windows and doors for drafts and insulate or seal as needed. Put in storm windows and doors if you have them. Don’t forget the basement.
-Hire a professional to perform a furnace inspection as well as having the dryer vents and duct work cleaned. We recommend this yearly at least.
-Drain any water from outdoor faucets, spigots, hoses and sprinklers. Locate water sources if they need to be shut off in an emergency. Use heat tape on problem pipes inside the home to help prevent them from freezing.
-Have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned if needed.
-If any pipes or ducts travel through an exterior wall, use caulking or weather stripping around entry points.
Tackle one or two of these tasks at a time, enlist family members for help and you’ll be done in no time. It’s worth the prep to help avoid a potential situation.

Must-Haves for Your Emergency Kit | SERVPRO® of Western Dutchess County
8/22/2019 (Permalink)
Having a well-stocked emergency supply kit offers some peace of mind in weather-related disasters!
When a weather emergency strikes, there will not always be time to gather your supplies before heading to a basement or other safe space to wait out the storm. Having an emergency kit that is fully stocked and ready can make such a big difference in your survival during a disaster.
Experts recommend that your emergency kit contain at least 72 hours of provisions as well as some necessities such as personal hygiene supplies and emergency radios. An emergency kit is the best way to obtain peace of mind and know your family will be safe.
The Basic Emergency Kit:
While every emergency kit should be tailored for individual needs and considerations, to build an emergency kit with the bare necessities, this is what Ready.gov recommends:
- At minimum, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days
- A three-day supply of non-perishable food per person
- Either a battery-powered or hand-crank radio for local alerts
- A NOAA Weather Radio for national alerts
- Flashlights for each person
- A well-stocked first-aid kit
- Any prescription medications your family members may require
- A surplus of portable phone chargers, charger cords and batteries for the flashlights and radios
- Dust masks for filtering debris-filled air
- Paper towels, toilet paper, garbage bags, hand sanitizer and any other personal hygiene supplies
- A non-electric can opener and utensils for food.
- Local maps of the area with shelters clearly marked
Additional Supplies for Emergencies:
Having the above items is a great place to start, but if you have the space and ability to build out a more robust kit, there are some additional items you may want to include:
- Tools such as wrenches, hammers, nails and pliers
- Plywood in case it is necessary to barricade doors or windows
- Duct tape and plastic sheeting in case an impromptu shelter needs building
- Solar-powered chargers for using electronics long-term
- Climate-appropriate spare clothes
- Thin, camping-style blankets
- Unscented bleach, which can be used as a disinfectant or water purifier
- A source of entertainment for adults and children
- Cash and/or travelers checks

Know the 3 categories of contaminated water that can occur with a water damage in your Dutchess County home.
4/3/2019 (Permalink)
Regular water that happens to be pouring out of duct work? Nope! This is Category 2 as it traveled and affected many areas of the home.
When dealing with water damage in your Western Dutchess County home or business, there are a lot of things to think about.
One of the key questions our experts will need to know is if the water affected more than one area or floor? It’s important for us to know what we might be working with and if contaminated water is part of it. This might not be the case for your loss, but our Production Managers will determine the extent when they’re onsite.
There are 3 categories of contaminated water that we take into consideration:
Category 1: Source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans and classified as "clean water". Things like a broken water supply line, tub or sink overflows or appliance malfunctions are generally a Category 1.
Category 2: Contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants and can cause discomfort or sickness when consumed or even exposed to, known as "grey water". This type carries micro-organisms and nutrients of micro-organisms. Examples are toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures, and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.
Category 3: Known as "black water" and is grossly unsanitary. This water contains polluted agents, harmful bacteria and fungi, and can cause severe discomfort or sickness. These contaminated water sources that affect the indoor environment and includes water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water. Category 2 Water or Grey Water that is not promptly removed from the structure and/or has remained stagnant may be re-classified as Category 3 Water. Toilet back flows that originates from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination no matter what color it is or what content is in it.
This photo is an example of water damage that started in the 3rd floor of the home, traveled through sheet rock, insulation and hard wood floors (which have laminate on them) and finally came out through the ducts in the basement. This water was classified as Category 2 as it was loaded with physical contaminants.
Our water damage remediation experts at SERVPRO are certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification and follow their precise protocols and procedures for cleaning and disposing of this contaminated water.

- Metal beginning to rust and corrode

Frozen Pipes 101
11/23/2018 (Permalink)
These easy tips will help prevent a massive headache
Pipe bursts are one of the most common water damages that SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County receives from the months of December to March.
Simple fact, when water freezer it expands. When water freezes in a pipe, that pipe can only expand so much before it bursts. However, it's not necessarily the frozen water the caused the burst. The water pressure between the ice and the closed faucet has enough pressure to break a pipe and cause water damage in your home or business.
Some tips on how to prevent frozen pipes:
-Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells.
-Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through the faucets.
-Keep your home or office temperature no lower than 55 degrees F.
-If going away, have someone check on your house or business daily to make sure it's warm enough.
-Seal leaks that allow cold air inside where pipes are located.
-Insulate pipes in crawl spaces and attics. These are the most susceptible to freezing.
If you find you have frozen pipes, call a plumber immediately. Should you have any water damage, call SERVPRO of Western Dutchess County at 845-831-3600 and we'll clean up all the damage.

Fireplace tips to help keep your Western Dutchess County home safe
11/23/2018 (Permalink)
While fireplaces can provide warmth and comfort, if you are not careful, they can also be a hazard.
When the colder temperatures start to set in, many homeowners will turn to their fireplace, wood or pellet stoves as an additional heat source. While fireplaces can provide warmth and comfort, if you are not careful, they can also be a hazard. Keep in mind the following precautions to help ensure a safe winter season.
Keep Your Chimney Fireplaces and Wood Stoves Clean
- Have your chimney, fireplace, wood or pellet stove inspected and cleaned by a licensed chimney specialist. They should be maintained annually to help ensure they are functioning safely and efficiently.
- Be sure to keep the area around the hearth clear of debris, decorations and any other combustible materials.
- If you have a wood burning, insert or pellet stove, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for additional guidance related to operation and venting.
Keep Fires Burning Safely
- Be sure the flue is open before lighting your fire to help ensure the fireplace will vent properly. Do not close your damper until you are sure the fire is out.
- When starting a fire, only use a match or commercial firelighter. Never use flammable liquids to start a fire.
- Glass doors of a fireplace should be kept open while burning a fire. This allows the fire to receive enough air for complete combustion and to help reduce creosote build-up in the chimney.
- Metal mesh screens should remain closed whenever your fireplace is in use to help keep embers in the fireplace.
- Only use dry wood in your fireplace. Wet wood can increase creosote buildup, which can lead to chimney fires.
- Do not burn plastic because it can release toxic chemicals and cause damage to your chimney, fireplace or wood stove.
- Never burn a Christmas tree in your fireplace as the sparks from the burning needles can increase the risk for a chimney fire. Also, do not burn cardboard boxes, wrapping paper or trash in your fireplace.
- Never leave a fire in a fireplace unattended. Before leaving the house or going to bed, you should make certain to fully extinguish the fire.
- Allow ashes to cool completely before disposing of them — ashes can take several days to cool completely. Never empty ashes directly into a trash can. Instead, place ashes in a covered metal container located at least 10 feet1 away from your home and any other building.
Keep the Outside of Your Home and Your Chimney Safe
- Firewood should be stacked at least 30 feet away from your home.2
- Your roof and chimney should be kept clean of leaves, pine needles and other debris. Prune trees and branches to keep them away from your chimney.
- Install a chimney cap with spark arrester to help keep debris, leaves, branches and animals out, and to help prevent burning embers or sparks from escaping and creating a fire hazard.
Keep the Inside of Your Home Safe with Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors to help make your winter even safer, we recommend that you take the time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. A smoke detector is the most effective way to detect smoke from a fire and signal an alarm so that you can get you and your family out safely. A carbon monoxide detector can alert you to the buildup of this dangerous odorless and colorless gas. Make sure you test the detectors monthly, and after you change the batteries to ensure they work properly.

A relatively painless process can help you recover more from insurance after a catastrophe-
The devastation from the recent California fires is a reminder of why it’s important to take stock of what you own now—before something happens. In the unlikely event of a fire, a wind storm, a robbery, or another unexpected event, homeowners insurance can help you repair your home and recover or replace your belongings. But you’ll need to remember what you’ve lost—which can be a challenge during a time of trauma.
That’s why it’s wise to consider doing a home inventory. Having a list or visual reminder of your belongings can make a big difference in how much the insurer will pay, and thus how well you’ll recover financially.
“A home inventory is beneficial because it gives homeowners and insurers a clear picture of how many items are in a home and how much it would cost to replace them in the event of a natural disaster,” says Michael Barry, a spokesperson at the industry-sponsored Insurance Information Institute, based in New York City.
It's Easy to Get Started:
Creating a home inventory doesn’t have to be difficult.
“It can even be as simple as standing in the middle of each room and taking a 360-degree video, and uploading to the cloud or emailing it to yourself,” says Melanie Hart, senior underwriting manager for the San Antonio insurance company USAA.
To start, focus first on the big and valuable: major appliances, jewelry, furniture, rugs, electronics, and art or collectibles.
Using your smartphone’s video feature, sweep the camera around a room, narrating the description of items you’re filming and—if you remember—what you paid. (Photograph receipts if you have them.) Capture serial numbers and brand names when possible so that the insurer can replace what you had with exact or similar items.
Once you’ve cataloged the pricier items for your home inventory, open cabinets, drawers, closets, and boxes and do the same. But don’t sweat the small stuff too much. An insurance adjuster is likely to create a “bulk estimate” of those things—for example, $200 for everything in your utility closet, insurers told us.
Store the Information Right
Store the images and video for your home inventory on a cloud service, such as iCloud or OneDrive, or put it on a thumb drive and stash it in a safe deposit box or fireproof safe.
Several insurers even offer free web-based home inventory storage tools and apps. American Family Insurance’s DreamVault, for instance, lets anyone create a digital home inventory; it’s available online and as an Android or iOS app.
